Different Career and Opportunities for Aspirants after MBBS


All regarding MBBS – Considered to be one of the most reputable courses a student can pursue, the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery course – commonly known as MBBS, is the predominant medical undergraduate course in India. It is the accepted path to becoming a doctor of modern medicine in the country.

The first thing that students generally look for after finishing their degree is a job, be from any field. Same goes for MBBS students. Being on employment can get the candidates an idea of how things work out. They can even get hands-on experience if they work a few times after finishing their undergraduate. As well they can get a rural posting mainly in rural and remote areas and work as a practitioner in primary health centres in their individual states.

So here are opportunities for MBBS aspirants can latch onto.

1. MD/MS/Diploma

The first option would be continuing your education. MS is Masters in General Surgery while MD is Masters in General Medicine. Specialty in MD or MS for three years. Diploma of National Board or DNB for three years. These are Post Graduation courses and can be pursued only after the successful completion of the MBBS study. MD or MS are postgraduate courses offered by medical colleges and affiliated universities or deemed universities which may have acknowledgment all over the country by Medical Council of India or at least in a state by the state medical council.

2. Combined Medical Services (CMS)

If you would like employment in the public sector then you can go for Combined Medical Service or CMS conducted by UPSC once a year within the month of July/August. You become a doctor for governmental organizations like Railways, Municipal Corporations as Medical Officers, etc. It is a good choice if you want a permanent job with the government and if you like to be a part of the administrative workforce of the hospital.

3. MBA

The demand for Doctor's with an MBA degree is growing rapidly in India, with many private hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. Institutes offering MBA like IBS Hyderabad, IIM's, FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, XLRI Jamshedpur absorbs students based on the merit list of the CAT exam held every year.

4. Clinical Practice

If you want to make money then clinical practice is the best way to start. Clinical practice can be done in the government sector as well as in the private sector. If you don’t want to hitch either of these two sectors then you can run your own clinic.

5. Clinical Research

When it comes to the sphere of research, this is the least preferred option by MBBS graduates and India is far behind. There are some great institutes in India that offer research opportunities like ICMR(Indian Council for Medical Research), CCMB(Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology),  CCMB(Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology), St. John's Research Institute. Many institutes like AIIMS, NIMHANS, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, PGI, Mumbai (TIFR) offers a Ph.D. degree.
